“Heroes” is the theme for the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble’s spring concert at the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater this Sunday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. The band will celebrate military heroes, athletic heroes, historical heroes, and, of course, superheroes.
Musical highlights from the program will include John Williams’ “Olympic Fanfare and Theme,” and music from the hit movies “The Incredibles,” “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,” and “1941.” Violin soloist Dina Kostic will be featured in the hauntingly beautiful theme from “Schindler’s List,” recognizing the heroism of Oscar Schindler in saving the lives of thousands of Jews during the Holocaust.
The program will also include musical selections that celebrate the heroes of fantasy, including “Gandalf” from Johan de Meij’s Lord of the Rings Symphony, and themes from popular television series such as “Wonder Woman,” “Spiderman” and “Batman.” Audience members are welcome to dress up as their favorite character, although wigs should not be so large that they block someone else’s view.
Since Artistic Director Dan Bassett took the podium in 2006, the Pride Wind Ensemble has become renowned for incorporating special lighting and visual effects, as well as custom videos, to accentuate the music.
In addition to the musical program, the band is partnering with the American Veterans for Equal Rights, a local gay veterans organization, to honor our nation’s veterans. Gay American Heroes, which is constructing a monument to honor gays and lesbians who were murdered because of their sexuality, will also host an exhibit in the theater lobby.
“This is a very exciting concert for us,” commented Bassett. “We all love comic book heroes and sports heroes, but there are also so many real life heroes right here in South Florida. We’re proud to recognize our veterans and the Gay American Heroes.”
The band and Petals Panache will also honor family heroes—mothers—with a special rose presentation to all mothers in the audience during the intermission. Feel free to throw them onto the stage at the end of the show if you had a good time.

The Miami Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce’s monthly networking program for professionals in Miami Beach, Sandpipers, meets on Wednesday, May 14 at VIX in the Hotel Victor, 1144 Ocean Drive. Oakland Park’s Rising Action Theatre will hold auditions on Sunday, May 18 for two upcoming productions, “Take Me Out” and “Some Men.”
“Take Me Out” is a play about the experiences of a professional baseball player as he struggles with coming out and then must deal with the reactions of his teammates and fans. “Some Men,” by Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Terrence McNally chronicles the gay experience in the 20th century.
Artistic Director David Goldyn is seeking men of all races, ages 18-65. Athletic builds are needed for “Take Me Out.” No word yet on whether or not this production will feature the famous locker room shower scene, in which all the actors on stage are naked. Although what’s the point of doing this play if you’re not going to do the naked parts?
