The Nadadores of South Florida, Miami-Dade’s gay swim team, will host a fundraising reception on Saturday, May 17, at the Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts Center, 2043 North Miami Ave. in Miami. The party, “Noche Nadadores,” will include complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks provided by Ice Box Café and entertainment by DJ Rob Solomon. The party starts at 7 p.m. A $20 donation is requested. And we request that all Nadadores swimmers attend in their Speedos, although they will undoubtedly ignore us and show up in clothes. Boo-hiss. Proceeds from the event will help send swimmers to Washington, D.C. in June for the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics (IGLA) championships.
The Nadadores compete in U.S. Masters Swimming meets, as well as gay meets sponsored by IGLA. For more information, go to www.nadadores.org or email nadadoresflorida@aol.com.
Safe Schools South Florida (formerly GLSEN South Florida) held its 10th annual Miami-Dade Diversity Day and Student Empowerment Conference for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) students and their straight allies on Friday, May 2 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Almost 400 students from more than 20 schools participated in five hours of group activities and esteem-building exercises.
"Traditionally, whenever gay students are surveyed, one of the key issues they identify is the need to socialize with other gay students," said Robert Loupo, co-founder and executive director of Safe Schools South Florida. "That's why things like this conference and Pridelines' annual gay prom are so important for our young people."
Local support agencies such as Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), Care Resources, the Alliance for GLBTQ Youth and others spoke to the students about services they offer. Miami-Dade school representatives were also present and supported the program as in years past.

She Ventures Out (SheVO), a Miami-Dade based networking and social group for lesbians, will host a dominoes tournament on Friday, May 16 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Bohemio, 2845 Coral Way in Coral Gables. The winner takes home half the proceeds. Cost is $7 for members and $10 for non-members. So if you’re really good at dominoes--and you’re a lesbian (or you can pretend to be one for an evening)--get lots of people to join the tournament, so you can beat the pants off of everyone and win more money. And let’s all agree right now to not call the Florida Gaming Commission question the legality of this little gambling escapade, shall we?
The group also has a few remaining vacancies for the first SheVO cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of the Seas, May 30 – June 2. The three-night cruise will depart from the Port of Miami and take SheVO cruisers to Nassau, Bahamas and Coco Cay, the cruise line’s private island. Cabins start at $375 per person, based on cabin choice, and not including taxes and fees.
For more information about SheVO activities, go to www.sheventuresout.com or call 305-804-4657.
Tickets are still available for the Gay and Lesbian Community Center’s “Take us out to the ballpark” night on Saturday, May 17, when the Florida Marlins take on the Kansas City Royals. The evening begins at 4 p.m. with a pre-party at Bill’s in Wilton Manors before the party bus leaves for the game.
Tickets are $120 each and include club level seat, two hour open bar and buffet at the game, transportation to and from the stadium and a one-year individual membership to the center. Tickets are available at the GLCC and Bill’s. Proceeds benefit GLCC programs.
