Phone Call with RuPaul
A little chat about ‘Starrbooty,’ the Coliseum and the fading of South Florida’s all-nude revues.

In a vast Queendom, one figure stands above the rest, RuPaul. The versatile performer has brought the world infectious dance music, notable performances and, most recently, ‘Starrbooty,’ a film some twenty years in the making which is finally out now in film festivals nationwide and will be on DVD in October. And this Saturday, July 28, you can catch the one and only ‘Supermodel’ singing at Fort Lauderdale’s Coliseum. The Express was fortunate enough to get a few minutes of time on the phone with Ru to get some advice from Jan Brady’s famed counselor.

Express: I have to tell you… I’m a little off balance right now, because someone told me I shouldn’t call you ‘she,’ but everyone else I’ve interviewed who does drag has preferred it. Tell me about that?
RuPaul:
That’s why I’m not everyone else who does drag. That’s why I am the queen. Yeah. That’s why I stand alone. I’m not like everyone else. Get it?!

Let’s talk about the new movie, ‘Starrbooty.’ This is kind of how you got started, no?

Well, I dunno. I got started a lot earlier than that. It’s a really funny-as-f**k movie that I’ve wanted to make for a long time and we finally got to do it twenty years after I made the first one and it’s killin’ ‘em at the festivals. People are crazy for it. I’ve seen it so many times and it still makes me laugh. It is a f**king hoot. I like to say, that a movie should make you laugh, horny… You should get off on it and it should also gross you out. I think our movie does all of the above.e

What do you have to say about the passing of Tammy Faye?

Well, the passing of Tammy Faye. I really enjoyed Tammy Faye, and as you well know, it’s going to happen to all of us. It’s part of our contract that we seem to forget as time goes by. We’re also shocked when it happens. But we conveniently forget that we signed on for. I think it’s fabulous. She had a great run on this planet. She influenced a lot of people. As a person, having spent time around her, she was absolutely lovely. No malice in her game whatsoever and I’ve always loved that. I’ve always dug people who were kind at heart, ya know? People take kindness for weakness, but being kind is the greatest sign of strength that anyone could do…

This Saturday, you’re performing here in Fort Lauderdale at the Coliseum. What can we expect?

Oh, um… I don’t know… (laughs) I’ll be doing songs from the movie ‘Starrbooty,’ and there is a soundtrack to the movie. You can get the songs on my website. The music is very Lil’ Kim meets Trina with some Miami Bass… but then I’ll be doing some of my older repertoire also.

How do you feel about Fort Lauderdale?

I think Fort Lauderdale is fantastic because now in South Florida, it’s the gay capital. Miami Beach is no longer gay, and Key West doesn’t seem to be very gay anymore. I love the fact that Fort Lauderdale is now gay and it has affordable housing for gay people, and there are still male strip clubs there, so I love Fort Lauderdale.

Those clubs actually make me uncomfortable. I end up feeling bad for the person and just focus on how they’re objectifying themselves.

So you project your own fears onto this other person…

Well, I—

Well, what else could it be? There are only two emotions: love and fear. And love would be celebrating this person. My only problem with strippers is the people who aren’t into it, like these straight guys rolling their eyes at the customers. If you’re not into it, don’t do it. Even the people who work behind the f**kin’ counter at Best Buy, They don’t give a f**k about what they’re selling. And they’re like, ‘I’m going to get someone else to help you.’ No, don’t you get someone else! I want to hear it from you!

I hate to be the one to tell you that the all-nude clubs are actually on the way out, it seems. Cupids Cabaret closed on June 30.

Oh no… You live long enough and you see how people and their fear and their willingness to succumb to judgment f**king closes s**t down. Even these kids with the gay rights s**t. Truth is, that stuff is not given. Kids today take s**t way for granted. That ...
