Cyclones blow past Blues
Sidelines team headed for the 2007 Gay World Series in Phoenix

By JW ARNOLD
Friday, June 15, 2007

The Sidelines Cyclones pulled through a grueling five-game stand to take their division playoffs on June 3 at Mill’s Pond Park to earn a place at the Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA) World Series in Phoenix, Ariz. The Cyclones clinched the title with a decisive 15-8 victory over the Tropics Blues.

Locally, the Cyclones compete in the South Florida Amateur Athletic Association’s (SFAAA) Open C Division, which includes both men and women and gay and straight coaches, players, scorekeepers and fans. The team began playing together last September, and the divisional win is the culmination of many hours of hard work.

“On Sundays during the season, you would find these weekend warriors battling for trophies, titles and bragging rights,” said Laurie Whitaker, owner of Sidelines and sponsor of the Cyclones and four other SFAAA teams. “Finally, their hard work and competitiveness paid off, and dreams of glory came. We are so proud of this team.”

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR PRIDE- lines Prom: For some of us, the prom memories included blue felt bowties and unwieldy wrist corsages. For others, there was the unfulfilled longing to take the “real” dates of our choices.

Pridelines Youth Services continues its tradition of hosting an Adult Prom Dinner-Dance this year on Sept. 15 with “A Night in the Jungle,” an evening of music, entertainment, food and friends in the magical Tree Top Ballroom at Jungle Island. The organization is currently seeking volunteers to assist with the silent auction, soliciting sponsors, marketing and selling tickets, and decorations. Potential volunteers should contact Nate Bodner at nbodner@atlanticbb.net or 786-264-1316.

Since its inception in 1982, Pridelines has offered GLBTQ youth a safe space where they can develop a better understanding of themselves, socialize in a healthy, nurturing environment, explore their identities and plan their educational and future goals. The organization also sponsors an annual youth prom, which was held this past week, June 9.

GLCC READY FOR BIG BANG: The Gay & Lesbian Community Center of South Florida will celebrate the kick-off of Pride Weekend with a big bang — literally. The building on the site of a planned new gay center, across the street from the current GLCC, will be demolished on Wednesday, June 20. The GLCC board of directors will host a cocktail reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. June 20 in the parking lot of the current center at 1717 North Andrews Ave. in Fort Lauderdale to mark the occasion.

Besides the domolition, the GLCC has a busy schedule of upcoming events. On Saturday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the center, in partnership with Senior Action in a Gay Environment (SAGE), will host a Senior Health Fair. The free event will include health screenings, educational presentations, entertainment and give-aways. More than 60 organizations will display their services and products.

For more information about GLCC events, go to www.GLCCSF.org.

CELEBRATING LGBT BUSINESS: The Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce will host its Sixth Annual Gala Awards Dinner on Saturday, June 23, at the Radisson Miami, 1601 Biscayne Blvd. in Miami. The evening will begin with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction at 6:30 p.m. before the dinner and awards ceremony at 8 p.m. Tickets are $140 per person or $1,150 for a table of 10. For more information or to reserve tickets, go to www.gogaymiami.com.
